The NO SMOKING sign is doing an incredible amount of work here and accomplishing absolutely nothing. Yaniko Satou, the Chainsmoker Cat, is caught squatting directly beside it with a cigarette in her mouth and a can in hand, looking like rules are mostly decorative suggestions for other people. Ukupalua packs the scene with personality: messy pale-green hair, cat ears and tail, oversized V-neck shirt, loose blue pants, yellow clogs, a street-side base with manhole cover and curb, and the wonderfully pointless warning sign looming beside her. Even the pose sells the attitude—this isn’t some carefully staged glamour shot; Yaniko looks like you interrupted her questionable little smoke break and she genuinely could not give less of a shit. The contrast between the cute cat-girl design and the grubby street-corner energy makes this one especially fun, with enough environmental detail to turn a relatively compact character pose into a complete little scene.
