FAQ

Answers to the questions we get most often about garage kits, made-to-order 3D prints, painted commissions, shipping, custom designs, and why this website occasionally sounds like it has opinions.

General

What is Dungeon Master Minis all about?

Dungeon Master Minis is a one-person workshop creating made-to-order 3D printed garage kits for miniatures, statues, busts, and collectibles. Whether you want a raw hobby kit or a fully painted display piece, the focus is always quality, durability, and detail over mass production.

What is a garage kit?

A garage kit, or GK, is an unassembled collectible model kit that requires cleanup, assembly, and optionally painting. The term originated in Japan in the 1980s, where artists produced small-run resin kits from home workshops instead of factories. Think Hobby Lobby car kits — just with more anime and monsters.

What do your kits include?

Unpainted kits include only the selected model parts for assembly and finishing. Paints, brushes, glue, tools, and hobby supplies are not included. Instructions, when available, are typically found on the product listing and not included in the box. Painted orders arrive professionally finished and may ship in multiple parts for safe transit.

What scale should I choose for my game or collection?

For TTRPGs like D&D and Pathfinder, most miniatures are 28mm or 32mm scale, with modern heroic-scale minis leaning closer to 32mm for added detail. Larger display miniatures are commonly 75mm, while collectible statues are usually 1:4 to 1:12 scale.

Sizing Information
What materials do you use?

We use engineering-grade resin built to survive drops, tabletop abuse, pets, and occasional human stupidity. Crisp detail, stronger parts, and fewer repair jobs. The exact resin blend is part of our secret sauce, and we’re not publishing grandma’s recipe.

The DMM Difference
Do your models come painted or in color?

Most models are supplied unpainted and intended to be painted by the customer. They are printed in high-detail resin, and resin color may vary based on availability. Hand-painted options are available on most listings for customers who prefer a display-ready piece. Every painted model is painted by hand, not mass-produced by a machine.

Should I order painted or unpainted?

If you order unpainted, you’ll receive the model parts ready for assembly, cleanup, and painting yourself. Painted orders arrive fully assembled, prepped, painted, and display-ready. Select painted models may also offer optional magnetized assembly or LED lighting upgrades for extra shelf flex.

Painting & Commissions

How do I know your paint jobs don’t suck?

No finger-painting disasters here. I’ve been painting miniatures for over 10 years, professionally for 3, and larger collectible figures for the past 2. You can view finished commissions and work-in-progress shots on TikTok @dmminis and Instagram @dmminisus before ordering so you know exactly what leaves the bench.

Why is there a wait for painted pieces?

Painted commissions are completed entirely by hand by a one-person workshop. Larger or detailed pieces take substantial time between printing, cleanup, revisions, and painting. Queue timelines constantly shift, so exact completion dates are not provided. If you need something by a strict deadline, painted commissions may not be a good fit.

Are there painters better than you?

Absolutely. I spend around 20–30 hours painting many commissions, while some painters spend several hundred hours or an entire month on one piece. That’s why my $500 commission might cost $2,500 or more elsewhere. If someone wants true Golden Demon-level painting, it can absolutely be done — just expect the price and timeline to match.

Can I make it cheaper by printing and painting myself?

Maybe eventually — but probably not at first. Between printers, resin, tools, PPE, paints, brushes, and the inevitable “why did this fail at 98%?” moments, the startup costs add up fast. That said, building and painting your own models is a huge part of the hobby, which is exactly why we offer unpainted kits alongside painted commissions.

Can you commission a completely custom model design?

Yes. We offer fully custom-designed miniatures, statues, busts, collectibles, and STL files sculpted from scratch by a professional artist. This isn’t a low-poly character builder with a head swap and a sword change. If you can imagine it, we can probably sculpt it.

Orders & Shipping

What’s the turnaround time for orders?

Every order is made specifically for you, so production time varies based on queue size, model complexity, order size, and whether the order is unpainted or painted. Estimated production windows are shown during checkout and in your order confirmation. These are estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates.

For the full breakdown, including production timelines, shipping methods, delays, holidays, and carrier issues, please review the Shipping Policy.

Shipping Policy
Why is my order taking longer than expected?

Made-to-order printing is unpredictable. Shopify delivery dates are estimates, and while we do our best to meet them, prints fail, reprints happen, and painted commissions take substantial time by hand. Dungeon Master Minis is a one-person operation, and quality will always come before rushing orders out the door.

How much is shipping, and can I speed things up?

U.S. shipping is free on orders $99 and up. Orders under $99 ship for a flat $7.00. International orders pay full shipping costs due to increased carrier and customs fees.

Want it faster once it ships? Shipping upgrades are available at checkout at your expense. We’d slap a Haste spell on it if the Wizards of Logistics allowed it.

Missing parts or broken mini? What now?

Message us. Unpainted items can be returned within 90 days, and damaged parts are usually replaced without issue. Painted commissions are generally non-returnable, but repair and touch-up services may be available.

If your order arrives damaged, contact the shipping carrier first — all shipments are insured.

Pricing

Why do your prices cost more than some other shops?

Quality materials, industrial-grade resin, packing supplies, utilities, failed prints, labor, and time all factor into the cost. Many bargain-bin sellers use cheap brittle resin and rush parts into a box. We don’t. Large pieces can take dozens of hours between printing, cleanup, assembly, and paint. Cheap usually becomes expensive eventually.

Found it cheaper elsewhere — why buy from you?

Because “cheap” and “good” rarely share a room. We use engineering-grade resin, inspect every print, test-fit parts, and stand behind what we sell. Plenty of shops compete on price. We compete on quality, durability, and customer service. If cheapest was all that mattered, you’d have stopped searching already.

Do you offer gift cards?

We sure do. Gift cards are available in $10, $25, or $50 amounts — perfect for surprise loot drops or last-minute gifts.

STL Files & Licensing

Do you sell STL files?

No. We do not sell STL files for models listed in our shop. We are licensed to sell physical prints only. If you’re looking for the digital files, you’ll need to purchase them directly from the original designer. The only STL files we provide are for fully custom sculpting projects commissioned through us.

Who owns the STL if I commission a custom design?

Custom STL files are licensed according to the agreement for that specific project. By default, custom designs are for personal use only unless commercial rights or exclusive ownership are purchased separately in writing. Dungeon Master Minis will not resell or redistribute your STL files unless specifically authorized.

About Dungeon Master Minis

Why is your website so sarcastic?

Because I am.

Dungeon Master Minis is run by one person who spends most days printing, cleaning, assembling, painting, packing, answering emails, updating the website, fighting shipping software, and occasionally wondering why a printer decided today was the day to develop trust issues.

A little humor keeps me sane. The sarcasm is intentional. The quality standards are real. The personality is part of the brand.
